Denture & Relines

Denture & Relines

When dentures are first made, they fit snugly, molded specifically to the shape of your gums. However, changes in bone and gum tissue can make them feel loose, shift during use, or cause discomfort.

A reline adjusts the denture’s interior to match your current mouth shape, restoring a secure, comfortable fit and making everyday wear easier.

What Is a Denture Reline?

A denture reline is a process that reshapes the inner surface of your denture to match the current contours of your gums. Rather than replacing the entire denture, a reline fine-tunes the fit so your appliance sits the right way.

There are three main types:

Hard Reline

A hard reline provides a durable, long-lasting adjustment. A thin layer of the denture base is removed and replaced with new acrylic material, which is molded to the exact shape of your gums.

The denture is then sent to a lab for a precise fit. We recommend hard relines every two years for most full denture wearers.

Soft Reline

For patients with sensitive gums or persistent sore spots, a soft reline may be more comfortable. Instead of hard acrylic, we add a cushioned material to the denture base.

This softer layer can make wearing dentures easier and typically lasts one to two years before needing replacement.

Temporary Reline

If gums are swollen, inflamed, or uneven due to long periods without adjustment, a temporary reline may be used. Made with a softer, medicated material, it allows tissues to heal and return to a healthier state before moving forward with a more permanent reline or new denture.

How Do You Know If You Need a Denture Reline?

Signs that a reline may be needed include:

  • Loose dentures
  • Shifting or slipping while speaking or eating
  • Sore spots or irritation on your gums
  • Discomfort when biting down
  • Frequent need for denture adhesive to hold them in place
  • Visible gaps between your dentures and gums
