What to Do After Each Procedure

Composite Fillings

  • Avoid chewing or hot beverages while your mouth is numb.
  • Some hot, cold, or pressure sensitivity is normal, along with soreness at injection sites. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help.
  • You may chew as soon as numbness wears off, since fillings are fully set at that time.
  • Contact us if sensitivity worsens, if your bite feels uneven, or if you experience persistent pain.

Cosmetic Dental Reconstruction

  • Adjusting to your new bite may take several days. If you notice high spots or issues with your bite, call us to schedule an adjustment.
  • Some hot and cold sensitivity is normal. Use warm saltwater rinses three times daily and take mild pain relievers as needed.
  • Speech may feel different at first, and increased salivation is common. These should normalize within a week.
  • Brush and floss every day to protect your new dental work and attend regular cleaning appointments.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods, chewing on ice, pens, or fingernails, and limit stain-causing foods and smoking.
  • If you play sports, ask about a custom mouthguard. Use any night guard provided to protect your teeth from grinding.

Crowns and Bridges

  • Temporary crowns or bridges protect your teeth while your final restoration is being made. Avoid sticky or hard foods and chew on the opposite side if possible.
  • Brush normally, but floss carefully around temporaries to prevent dislodging.
  • Sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common for a few weeks after placement. Mild pain relief can help.
  • If a temporary crown comes off, bring it with you to the office so we can re-cement it.
  • Contact our office if your bite feels uneven or if you have any pain or concerns.

Tooth Extractions

  • Bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes after your appointment to help a blood clot form. Replace gauze as needed if bleeding continues.
  • Avoid rinsing vigorously, drinking through straws, smoking, or brushing near the extraction site for 72 hours.
  • Limit strenuous activity for 24 hours to reduce bleeding.
  • Apply ice packs or frozen vegetables to reduce swelling, which should subside within 48 hours.
  • Take pain medication as prescribed and finish any antibiotics if given.
  • Eat soft, nutritious foods initially and resume normal dental care after 24 hours.
  • Call our office immediately if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, or swelling lasting more than a few days.
