Tooth Extractions
At Zelda Court Dental Care, we always strive to preserve your natural teeth. However, there are times when extraction becomes the best option to protect your oral health and prevent complications.
Our team ensures the procedure is precise and comfortable, guiding you through each step and discussing options for replacing the tooth when needed.

When Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?

A tooth may need to be removed for several reasons, such as:
- Severe decay that can't be repaired
- Advanced periodontal (gum) disease
- Broken teeth that can’t be restored
- Impacted or poorly positioned teeth
- Preparation for orthodontic treatment
Removing a tooth can affect chewing, jaw alignment, and the position of surrounding teeth. As a result, we discuss alternatives and replacement options to minimize long-term effects on your smile.
What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?
First, we numb the area around the tooth (gums and jaw) with a local anesthetic to prevent pain. You may feel pressure as the tooth is gently loosened and rocked to expand the socket, which is normal. If you feel any discomfort, let us know so we can adjust anesthesia and keep you comfortable.
Once we remove the tooth, we place gauze over the extraction site, and a blood clot begins forming. In some cases, stitches may be placed to help close the extraction site, though not all extractions require them.

When Do Teeth Need to Be Sectioned?
Some teeth are firmly anchored or have curved roots that make standard extraction difficult. In these cases, the tooth is divided into sections and removed piece by piece.
This common approach allows for safe and precise removal while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissue.
Aftercare Instructions for Extractions
Proper care after an extraction is key to healing:
- Bite on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes to form a blood clot. Replace if bleeding continues.
- Avoid disturbing the clot: no rinsing vigorously, using straws, smoking, drinking alcohol, or brushing near the site for 72 hours.
- Limit vigorous exercise for 24 hours to reduce bleeding risk.
- Manage pain and swelling with prescribed medication and ice packs.
- Continue any prescribed antibiotics as directed.
- Eat soft, nutritious foods and drink plenty of fluids; resume normal eating when comfortable.
- Maintain oral hygiene by gently brushing and flossing other areas of your mouth.
Contact our office if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, prolonged swelling, or any adverse reaction to medication.
